The art of of well-beeing

ERICH FROMMToday I came across something very interesting. In my phylosophy class we were talking about a book called ‘To have or to be’ by Erich Fromm. He is taking a critical look at the new evolved and experimantel society in the industrial countries. The people in such societies don’t seem to able to be happy, eventhough people in poorer countries can be happier and enjoy their lives a lot more, which does not seem to be logical since they don’t have enough money to live their lifes in a luxurious way. ‘So how come?’ was the question I was asking myself?

We came to the conclusion that we have a lot of wishes. We actually do believe that if we could make our wishes come true, we would be ultimately happy. But in fact life seems to become boring when there is no desire left, to live for.
A classmate of mine said: ‘Eventhough one has everything one desired, there still is a ‘black’ emptiness, which makes you think that you still haven’t reached ultimate happiness.’
Where pointed out: ‘I think that, that ‘emptiness’ can only be filled by our own. So if someone decides(!) to be happy, that person can be happy.’

As a conclusion I would say everyone is able to be happy. You decide.
